Hey there! Even as BLUE SHIELD DNIPRO works its way up the technothriller new release best seller lists, the members of the DEFIANT Sounding Board - who include some amazing profiles from Navy, Army, Marines, Air Forces of the world, as well as enthusiastic military fiction fans - are hard at work picking apart the early access version of DEFIANT.

The Admiral Nakhimov. Yes, it looks scary. But a swarm of Ukrainian kamikaze drones could sink it.

The VLS cells used will include Type 41 (standard) and Type 57 (peripheral VLS) as recently implemented on the upgraded Zumwalt. How many? The Pentagon has floated 140 VLS cells, but we are going with 200 (260+ missiles as some can be quad packed) for two reasons: 1) because there will be space enough since we have eliminated the 5" guns, and 2) Defiant needs a lot of missiles to get through our scenario! 200 cells is not crazy: it compares with 122 cells on a Ticonderoga, 112 on a Chinese Renhai cruiser, and 176 on the upgraded Russian Kirov class. BTW though it is classified by NATO as a battlecruiser, the 46 year old Admiral Nakhimov is a beast, and the closest thing to the Defiant already on the seas. (I am already thinking Defiant vs Nakhimov might be a good follow up novel - if Defiant survives against the Shandong!)

Propulsion: so far the Pentagon decision seems to be nuclear, similar to the Admiral Nakhimov, which offers 'future proofing' regarding electrical power needs, but is strategically questionable. Only one US shipyard (Newport News) specializes in reactor powered surface vessels, which severely limits production capacity/speed. It makes it entirely possible the decision to proceed with Defiant would force the US to delay an aircraft carrier build to accommodate this battleship. Eliminate the power hungry star-wars weapons such as the imaginary railgun and similarly unproven lasers, and a much more sensible option would be traditional gas turbines. But sensible doesn't always win.

Stealth: low observable hull form, with retractable sensor mast, supplemented by antennas/sensors on a tethered drone.**

Defensive systems (other than missiles/ASROC): Electronic Warfare suite SEWIP Block 3 (AN/SLQ-32v7), CRAW Anti Torpedo Torpedoes**, Nulka Mod 3 (drone swarm decoy variant**), 4x30mm CIWS, 2xHPM High Powered Microwave arrays, multiple .50 cal/25mm/7.62mm/40mm grenade launcher crew-served weapons.

Automation: AI and automation means our Defiant's crew is reduced from 1500ish for an Iowa class battleship to 350 for Defiant. (Spoiler: this reliance on AI and automation may be a plot point in itself ...)

Escorts: Our Defiant will be accompanied by 8 'optionally crewed' (in this case, uncrewed) Overlord class vessels. These are adaptable multirole vessels based on oil industry fast tenders that can perform ISR, electronic warfare, ship tender, anti-submarine, air-defense and anti-ship operations. They can be launched, recovered, and reconfigured from Defiant's well deck (yes, we are including a well deck!).

Our armed Overlord escort drones will feature 4 diagonal launch VLS cells each (the 8 drones = 2 x anti-air SM-6, 2 x antiship LRASM, 2x ASW ASROC/towed sonar) except for the 2 x unarmed tender vessels. The flight deck can accomodate either crewed or uncrewed VTOL aircraft and drones.

Defiant is also accompanied on this mission by two Orca flight II submersibles, which depart before her to sweep the seas ahead.

The FX Beta Team's Master Mariner: meet Barry

1. Tell us a bit about yourself

I'm Barry Roberts, a retired Master Mariner from Liverpool. I spent 50 years at sea starting in 1971 and retired with 30 years experience of Commanding a ship. I mainly worked in the North Sea but spent time in Chinese, Korean and Spain shipyards delivering vessels to the UK. I was Superintendent looking after the BP Jigsaw project for nine years and I also had a short stint moving oil rigs.

I am honoured to be Chairman of the HMS Hood Battlecruiser Association which takes up a lot of my time to maintain her memory but still manage some angling and learning to play golf

2. What books and authors apart from FX Holden do you enjoy or recommend?

I tend to read technothrillers by authors such as James Rosone, Larry Bond , Dale Brown but also any naval history books

3. What was the first book you were a beta reader for?

I think my first Beta read was "Pagasa"

4. You have given input on several FX Holden books, what do you enjoy about it?

I thoroughly enjoy using my knowledge and experience to assist in making the books as accurate as possible after reading so many books you drive buses through their narrative. I do enjoy being the team's "Compass"! (Editor note from FX: I am directionally challenged. Barry knows his northeast from his southwest.)

5. Are there downsides to being a beta reader?

The only downside to Beta reading is you cant read it as an ordinary book which does break up the plot continuation and enjoyment but its still worth it.

6. What book(s) is/are next on your To Be Read pile?

My present reads are "Palawan Gambit" and "Suwalki Crisis" by James Rosone. I also have books on Q ships and the Germany High Seas fleet in WW1 as light reading!

A day in the life of FX?

Hey there, as BLUE SHIELD DNIPRO has now hit the store shelves, I just took a snap of my desk as a way of letting you know what's up right now on the personal and professional front! The Eagle eyed among you will spot the details, others can pinch and zoom!

Got some books in the bookcase I've been saving for a giveaway I might do before December holiday season - Aggressor novels, Fiasco, some of the new What-if titles. That's on the to-do list! But thanks to the 20 readers who got the DNIPRO preorder vouchers! They have all gone out ... I look forward to reading what you think!
My iPad adorned with post-its. Reminders to update the acknowledgements in DNIPRO and check a couple of map details before the eBook drops 26.8; one with distances between Ukrainian cities and some details on drones; one that relates to the next book I'll be releasing, in November, DEFIANT. That one shows who is who in USS Defiant's Ship Mission Center, their role and where they physically stand; tucked into th top corner, the name of one of Ukraine's most successful front line units, so I could name check it in DNIPRO.
Apple watch charger because mine needs a new battery so I have to charge it daily. Grrr. Should I get another one ? The price here of a battery change for this model is nearly the same as buying new :( Is there a non Apple alternative? I don't need a fitness watch (god forbid) just one that can show multiple time zones, timers and alarms.

I have a person working with me right now (shout out Jeanne!) who builds actual destroyers and we are refining the build for our Defiant together. There's a lot of things with the proposed design we don't like and might change (because we can.) Like the fact someone wants it to be nuclear. Only Newport News in the US can build nuclear powered vessels and everything it builds is years behind schedule. Nuclear is unecessary, adds cost and will add delays. Then there's those 5" guns. What are they going to shoot at - shore emplacements? IF Defiant ever gets in range of anything worth shooting at with a 5" cannon, a hundred missiles could already have been launched. Eliminating the obsolete cannon, magazine and mount creates a lot of space for more missiles or defense systems! Oh, and the railgun? That fantasy weapon will go into the bin of history alongside the Zumwalt's Mark 51 'Advanced' Gun System, so we won't be including that either. Our Defiant will use tried and tested systems with a focus on over the horizon warfare so it can be built faster and is fit for future wars.
Notepad open to two pages I refer to all the time: miles per hour to kilometers per hour table, and airspeed Mach/MPH/Knots table.
Beer not beer. Because it's still summery here and (at time of writing, Friday) but it's non alcoholic anyway. I started a 'dry July' thing a couple months ago and have kept going, just to see how long I can. So, soon 8 weeks and counting without any drama. There are some damn good alcohol free beers in Europe these days: this one is a local Danish Skovlyst but it actually comes from Austrian brewery Fritz Egger. What I miss? Wine. All alcohol free, even low alcohol wine, tastes like grape juice. Please, prove me wrong! Suggest a good AF wine!
Tray of stuff, most importantly, wired earphones because I keep losing my ear pods. On the playlist right now as I head into the last chapters of DEFIANT (90,000 words in the can already and counting...) are:

WHAT-IF: Russia felt its hold on territories in Ukraine was threatened. Would it go nuclear?

Ukraine repeats its 2023 offensive, this time with Coalition nations fighting beside it. A depleted Russian air force starts deploying a new tactic. Is it an act of desperation, or a rehearsal for something beyond contemplation?

Captain Vadim ‘Beartooth’ Korenchuk of Ukraine’s 299th Tactical 1st Aviation Squadron is given an unenviable, and probably suicidal, assignment. Bulgaria has donated its soon-to-be-decommissioned fleet of 10 Su-25 Frogfoot aircraft to Ukraine, along with the pilots to fly them. Must Reads from an avid fictionista: Alain Martin, beta reader

Hey there, great reading list ahead!

1. Tell us a bit about yourself

I am French and I live in France. My house sits outside a small village up in the Alps, next to the mountain forest. I am now retired. I used to be financial controller for the european subs of american multinationals, in the high tech sector.

I live alone, with my belgian shepherd, Ragnar, who seems to think I am an acceptable boss.

Like I always point out in every beta reader introduction post, I have no service history but since I practiced a lot of scuba diving in remote places, a bit of sky diving, some regular competion shooting, I met and got friendly with some hardcore spec ops NCOs (one was my diving buddy for many years). Their experiences and my lifelong interest in human behavior under stress drew me to FX Holden stories.

These last years, I slowed down on the mountaineering activities (I used to be a group leader in the Swiss Alpine Club) and got more involved at the range with my shooting club.

2. What books and authors apart from FX Holden do you enjoy or recommend?

I enjoy military technothrillers and am currently into post apocalytic thrillers, but it changes over time. Over the years, I did enjoy the following books and FX Holden books, of course.

3. What was the first FX Holden novel you were beta reader for?

I think it was « Swarm ». Damn good one.

4. You have given input on several FX Holden books, what do you enjoy about it?

I like working on a book that is full of « well-researched 'future tech'; interesting character development, characters who move across books, i.e., they show up again; intriguing and somewhat complicated plotlines » like beta reader Julie Fenimore puts it. As a beta reader, when I spot something that is not historically or technically accurate, I can signal it. Sometimes, I even suggest some changes in a character or the story. To my surprise, FX Holden argues, but takes our remarks into account, even changing parts of the story .

And, of course, having a preview of a new book is always nice. Having the feeling of improving it is even nicer.

5. Are there downsides to being a beta reader?

The timeline is always a problem. We have a relatively short time to read the project. The FB beta reader-only page lists what the others have spotted, so we try not to repeat the same remarks. I am always impressed by the technical knowledge of the subject some people show. And so far, no one has rudely argued, like it is so frequent on social medias. It also means we have to read the book twice if we want to know the final version.

Long Read from FX: message from the Ukraine front

From the Ukraine front: “I am absolutely convinced that robots and drones should be doing the fighting wherever possible. That is how we preserve the lives of our soldiers.”

Former Ukrainian defense minister, Mykhailo Fedorov, has been on a media blitz lately trying to infuence the direction of travel for weapons producers and buyers toward low cost remote systems like those which Ukraine is currently using to hold back the much large Russian army. According to NYT, in his view, only armies equipped with cheap, smart and mass-produced weapons will survive in a new era of warfare.

His views clash with establishment figures in the military and weapons industry, not least the (also) former commander of Ukraine's armed forces, Oleksandr Syrskyi, who was a firm believer in the need for increased mobilization to put more bodies on the front line. "Drones cannot hold territory, only human soldiers can."

But war, Federov said, was heading toward “the robotization of the front line” and remote piloting of drones that would remove soldiers from danger. A next stage would be autonomous systems attacking targets, evolving then into “autonomous drones fighting autonomous drones powered by artificial intelligence.”

Ukrainian drones now inflict about 95 percent of casualties on Russian soldiers along the front, according to Mr. Fedorov, far outperforming snipers, howitzers, tanks and all other conventional weapons combined. This is instructive, given the US Army is currently developing a 'new' Concept of Warfighting - called Combined Arms at Echelon - in which legacy artillery, mortars and expensive systems like HIMARS would still dominate.

155mm artillery shells are a staple of most NATO arsenals but no longer needed in Ukraine, Federov argued, now that the battlefield had transformed from two lines of trenches into something new. Analysts now describe the front as overlapping zones of denied access: a zone where either army can kill anyone, on foot or in a vehicle, with exploding drones.

This kill zone, as many soldiers call it, is wider than the 18-mile or so range of standard 155-millimeter shells and the effective range of tank cannons.

NYT reported Ukraine is still experimenting with new tools. On his phone, Mr. Fedorov showed a video of an improbable-looking, self-balancing robotic unicycle armed with a gun. In the video, the device bounced over potholes and an irrigation ditch at tremendous speed, like an evil Segway scooter.

Federov has a vested interest in promoting this narrative: he represents a Ukrainian defense industry built around remote and autonomous systems. If he moves to the private sector, Mr. Fedorov told NYT, he would choose a company working on a promising new military technology such as lasers, humanoid combat robots, dirt-cheap missiles or an A.I. weapon that was being tested in Ukraine.

That weapon, a drone that autonomously chooses targets with no radio connection to a pilot, has been tested in strikes in Russian-occupied Crimea, Federov said, but has not been mass produced.

Russia, the great adapter/adopter, has embraced cheap, mass produced missiles recently in a move away from expensive ballistics to the S8000 Banderol, a jet powered cruise missile with 150 mile range and 300lb warhead. The US is well behind the curve here with GBAM (Ground-Based Affordable Mass) still not fully funded: this is a joint Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) and Army initiative targeting low-cost ($250,000 per unit or less), autonomous, ground-launched long-range strike weapons. The goal is to mass-produce standoff systems using commercial supply chains to preserve high-end munitions like Tomahawk and Precision Strike Missiles.

It should be said Federov's push for armed automatons is at odds with the Red Cross and other groups that support a human role in interpreting the Geneva Conventions and other laws of war that govern who can lawfully be killed in combat, and how.

Tell us a bit about yourself

I am an American expat living in Australia, before that, I was living in Washington, DC. In my first career I was a weapon systems and foreign policy analyst specializing in the Middle East and worked in the war gaming unit of a major US defense contractor during the tail end of the Cold War. In my second career I was government contract law attorney working for a management and consulting services company, the Canadian government, and US defense contractors and was involved in Desert Shield and Desert Storm campaigns. Between my second and third career moves I sailed a 36’ sailboat from Washington, DC to Australia leaving DC a month after a close encounter with 911. The trip took two years and spanned 14,000 nautical miles and 22 countries. My book about the trip The Log of Lone Eagle is on Amazon and has done quite well. Upon my arrival in Australia, I became a consultant to the Australian government for the government contracting Chapter 15 of the US / Australia Free Trade Agreement. My third and last career before retirement was here in Australia as Director of Legal Services Asia Pacific for a US software company where we licensed the predictive text linguistic databases used in mobile phone messaging. I retired five years ago and have a little place on the water in Northern New South Wales where I do a bit of boating and woodworking.

What books and authors apart from FX Holden do you enjoy or recommend?

I read quite a few military / techno thrillers, but FX Holden is certainly at the top of my list. Others include, James Rosone, Harold Coyle, Don Kieth & George Wallace, and James Cobb all of whom write military / techno series. All are future war writers that have amazing talents in fusing story lines, military technology, and geopolitical intrigue.

What was the first book you were a beta reader for?

I read FX Holden’s first book, Bering Strait and loved it. I recall emailing Tim (FX) and became one of his earlier beta readers. I’ve been part of his growing beta team ever since and have enjoyed every minute.

You have given input on several FX Holden books, what do you enjoy about it?

I enjoy the pace of his books. They grab you and you simply can’t put them down. Tim has an amazing ability to make his readers identify, on a human level, with character both friend and foe. I especially enjoy reading about all the new weapons in the pipeline that Tim brings to life in battle scenes that make your hair stand up. His geopolitical scene setting could be drawn from today’s headlines.

Are there downsides to being a beta reader?

You do have short windows for getting your comments in, but I enjoy reading the beta version and the final version that goes to print. It is amazing what I pick up on the second read. Any downsides? Not from my perspective.

Tech tips for aspiring authors, from FX!

So you want to write a book, but wonder whether you are equipped for success? Read on!

1) People (who write poetry) will tell you all you need to be a writer is paper and a pencil. But can you really trust a poet about tech? My motto has always been the more writing tools I have, the more I will write! It's simple math.

2) Yes, laptop. But for authorly authenticity as soon as you buy one, sandpaper some of the letters off. 'ShiftLCNM;:P' as a minimum. Now say after me "Oh, this laptop? Yeah it's munted, but I'm a bit sentimental about it since I wrote several bestsellers with it..."

3) Something weird that only a writer would own. Like this Korean retro Bluetooth keyboard paired with an old ipad. Because only a real writer would buy one! (Pro tip: vintage paper and ink ribbon typewriter for max street cred, though if you try to take it on a plane you will be arrested. Trust me on that.)

4) Macbook, or IPad+keyboard cover. Because one laptop is never enough and creatives use Apple. Using an Apple device boosts your creativity 600%. (Fact (C) Apple Inc.)

5) Kindle so you can listen to and approve the audiobook recording of your book. Smart phones also work but are less authorly. If you are anti-Amazon there are other eBook readers, apparently. Sound quality from a paperback can be a little hit and miss but they last longer between charges.

6) Digital paper device for annotating your final manuscript. You could print it out on actual paper and do it that way, but think of the trees, and the birds and insects who live in them, and the environmental cost of transporting all that paper. Plus it's easier to send it to your national library for posterity when they ask if you have an annotated copy of your Stella/Booker/Nobel prize winning novel.

Any tech I'm missing? Always looking to boost my output/creativity!

1. Tell us a bit about yourself

I live in the USA in Texas. My many decade career was two-fold: engineering in defense and aerospace contractors...made it up to VP of Engineering and Naval Intelligence, up to the O-5 level. Last major bit of military service was a year spent in Iraq supporting JSOC. I am married and have 2 dogs; a male black Labrador Retriever and a male black Great Dane.

2. What books and authors apart from FX Holden do you enjoy or recommend?

I prefer to read independent authors like Tim (FX)...and am currently going through ML Buchman's Nightstalkers series. He is fairly accurate in his military stuff but I am NOT a fan of the 'romance' parts of his novels....pretty much gloss over those parts. He also has a series about an NTSB crash investigation team. The earlier books in that series are the best.

3. What was the first book you were a beta reader for?

I'm pretty sure it was Okinawa.

4. You have given input on several FX Holden books, what do you enjoy about it?

Fabulous and well-researched 'future tech'; interesting character development, characters who move across books, i.e., they show up again; intriguing and somewhat complicated plotlines.

5. Are there downsides to being a beta reader?

The timeline is the only downside...these books I like to savor, so having to produce relatively quick feedback is frustrating. However, Beta reader feedback frequently results in changes to the text...so I can savor the final version, when I get it, because I know it will be slightly different from the original.

6. What book(s) is/are next on your To Be Read pile?

The final revised version of Dnipro and about 25 eBooks of other authors on my Kindle.

7. What is the image you use as your avatar?

A meme some folks in Ukraine did for me. I have volunteered to assist Ukraine, but am considered to be too old to fly drones for the Ukrainian military, but donate to them for what I believe to be a very just cause. One of my donations resulted in that meme. It used an image of me from my time in Iraq.

Fashion tips for aspiring authors, from FX!

Hey there! So you want to write a novel, but you're unsure what to wear to guarantee both practicality and literary inspiration? Read on!

1) Do your research. Don't just wander to the keyboard in your pyjamas and expect literary brilliance! Decide which writer you want to be likened to, and emulate their style. Obviously, here I am going for the Hemingway Look (more the Cuba years, than Paris...) for that 'it's like he's looking over my shoulder as I write' kind of feeling.

2) Overshirt or blouse with pockets. Always have a pocket you can drop a pen or pencil into because you never know when someone will walk past and ask you to sign their copy of your book. So awkward if neither of you has a pen.

3) Dark shirt or t-shirt. Writers are notoriously careless, so focused on avoiding dangling modifiers in their sentences they spill coffee, wine, tea, or grappa with annoying regularity. Wear something that won't show the stains and scare off agents or publishers looking for a more 'together' kind of author who looks like they can actually hit a deadline.

4) Comfortable trousers or skirt. You are going to be doing a lot of crossing and uncrossing of your legs. There will also be pacing around the room. Bending to pick up crumpled post-it notes. Occasional outdoor thinking jaunts. Pockets are optional if you paid attention to #2.

5) Hat. I know. You are thinking 'but FX, I am not a Hat Person. Not everyone can wear them like you.' But at least carry one, even if it is a baseball cap, since it is guaranteed that the sunlight from the reflection in the gazebo will hit you right in the eyes just as that moment of authory brilliance was about to strike you. Or the rain will penetrate the rainforest canopy and you will wish you had a hat to put over your latptop to keep it dry.

6) Footwear. See 4, as the same situations apply. But do NOT wear actual running shoes, since they will undermine any attempts you make to present yourself as a serious writer. Writers don't (...sorry, suppressing a gag reflex...) exercise.

What's in the pipeline after these?

Right now I'm writing DEFIANT, my next 'What-if' novel. This is a speculative novel about how this 'floating fortress' concept might work if these planned battleships were designed to incorporate all the lessons of modern warfare.

What's the USS Defiant? Here's an extract:

Chapter 1: A ship called Defiant

“Captain, XO, we need you in the SMC,” Executive officer of the USS Defiant, Commander Melissa Mayeaux, said over the intercom to her Captain, Kirk Morgan. “The tactical situation has changed.”

“Coming down XO,” Morgan replied. He was ‘touring the deck’, his euphemism for getting a boost of nicotine into his blood. It would take him a few minutes to get the three levels down to Defiant’s armored, electronically insulated, Ship Mission Center or SMC. Time she could use to work out what the hell China was playing at.

“Lieutenant Martinez, the PLA aircraft still on an intercept heading?” she asked her Battle Manager.

“Yes ma’am, straight as an arrow at 20,000 feet, 500 knots, holding tight formation,” Alejandro Martinez replied. “They don’t change course, they’ll cross our bow in … five minutes, 11 seconds.”

“Warn them off,” Mayeaux ordered him. She addressed her Weapons watch officer. “Lieutenant Washington, lock them up, single target track. Let them know we’re serious.”

“Aye ma’am, SM6 missiles armed, good track on all targets, locking with targeting radar,” Tyrone Washington replied.

Any other ship would be sailing as part of a taskforce, and Mayeaux would also be busy issuing warnings and commands to other ships too. But the Battleship Guided Missile Nuclear BGMN USS Defiant was its own taskforce. She commanded eight uncrewed surface vessels, two uncrewed underwater vessels and carried an air wing of long-range offensive and short-range defensive drones. Not to mention 400+ vertical launch missile cells that included 12 hypersonic Conventional Prompt Strike weapons.

“USV control, combat USVs to SHORAD mode Chief Gallagher,” she said, ordering their two surface vessels to arm their air defense interceptor missiles. There was no reason to suppose the Chinese aircraft would be so stupid as to launch missiles at Defiant – China and the US were not at war – but Mayeaux chose to use the opportunity to test her crew and systems. The reality was that if the six stealth fighters approaching from … now 70km out … wanted to attack Defiant, they could already have launched standoff missiles. Flying fast in airshow formation, on a straight line track that would cross Defiant’s bow, the Chinese action smelled more like a show of force than a kinetic threat.

Martinez’ low voice spoke into his mic, “Chinese aircraft from USS Defiant, you are entering our air defense zone in a hostile manner. Change course immediately or you may be fired on,” he said over the universal GUARD channel. Their combat AI took his warning, translated it to Mandarin, and repeated it. After a couple of beats he reported back. “No response, ma’am. No change in the contacts’ heading or speed.”

OK, so we’re playing chicken, Mayeaux decided. Bad idea, pilot.

Reader question: do you use AI writing FX Holden novels?

Short answer: Yes, but NOT for writing. I suck at math, so I use AI to run calculations for me (if missile X flies at mach 4 and is fired from behind at an aircraft flying away at mach 1.2 from a range of 200nm how long would it take to catch the aircraft...)

I also use AI to flag spelling and grammar mistakes in my first draft, before sending it to my beta readers, so that they can focus on the content, not the typos.

(Maybe I'm old school, but I tend to use Wikipedia and military reference sites like Janes or the excellent DATE - Decisive Action Training Environment - rather than AI for looking stuff up! There's more of a chance it will be accurate.)

While checking grammar and spelling on Blue Shield 2: DNIPRO recently, I hit the limit on my AI subscription for 'exceeding my token allowance.' You've probably seen something similar if you use AI. So what the deuce are 'tokens' and how do they relate to what I get for my 'plus' subscription? When I got my allowance back, I asked the AI itself to explain, and eventually, got to the truth. BLUF: They are just a convenience used by AI companies to charge whatever they think the market can bear. Here's that conversation:

What Tokens Are in AI

Tokens are small units of text that AI language models process and generate. They're the fundamental building blocks that models use to understand and create language. Rather than working with individual characters or whole words, tokens strike a middle ground—each one typically represents a word, part of a word, or even a punctuation mark.

How Tokenization Works

When you send an AI model a message, your text isn't fed directly into the model. Instead, it's first broken down into tokens through a process called tokenization. Each token is then converted into a numerical representation that the model can compute with mathematically.

Examples of Tokenization

Here's how a simple sentence might be tokenized:

"Hello world" might become: ["Hello", " world"] (2 tokens)
"The cat's toy" might become: ["The", " cat", "'s", " toy"] (4 tokens)
"AI" might be a single token, while "artificial" might become: ["art", "ificial"] (2 tokens)

The exact breakdown depends on the tokenizer being used—a set of rules for dividing text. Common tokenizers include Byte Pair Encoding (BPE) and SentencePiece.

Why Tokens Matter

Understanding tokens helps explain how AI models work and their limitations:

Computational efficiency: Tokens allow models to process language more efficiently than working with raw characters
Context windows: Models have a maximum token limit they can process in a single conversation. For example, AI can handle conversations up to a certain number of tokens
Cost: Most AI services charge based on tokens used (both input and output)
Model size relationship: The number of tokens a model can handle is tied to its architecture and training

Common Misconceptions

It's important to note that tokens don't map perfectly to words—they're more granular.

What is the logic behind using tokens for charging or is it just a simple way to monetize ai and later increase charges by increasing price per token?

Skepticism is actually well-founded. The answer is: it's both logically justified AND a smart monetization strategy — and those two things aren't mutually exclusive.

The Logic

Token pricing supposedly reflects computational costs:

Processing longer inputs requires more computation (more tokens = more matrix multiplications)
Generating longer outputs requires more processing
Different models have different computational efficiency—larger, more capable models cost more to run per token
It's more fair than flat-rate pricing because you only pay for what you actually use

A token-based model is better than charging a flat monthly fee or a fixed-price-per-query, because those would either be wasteful or unfair depending on usage patterns.

Surely most of the cost of running an ai model is stable - infrastructure/fixed power cost - not dependent on amount of computation required by user requests?

Correct—this significantly undermines the "pricing reflects computational costs" justification.

The Cost Structure Reality

Most of the expense in operating an AI service is indeed fixed or sunk:

Server infrastructure and data centers are largely fixed regardless of usage
Power consumption baseline is stable (servers run whether heavily loaded or idle)
Model training and R&D costs are already paid
Salaries, operations, licensing—all fixed

The marginal cost per additional token is actually quite small. Once the infrastructure is running, adding one more user query costs relatively little in real terms.

What This Means for Pricing Logic

If token pricing truly reflected variable costs, prices would be nearly negligible. The fact that companies charge meaningful amounts per token reveals something important:

They're not really pricing based on computational cost—they're pricing based on what the market will bear
Token pricing is a usage-throttling mechanism more than a cost-recovery one
It limits abuse (prevents infinite free requests) and manages demand
It creates the illusion of fairness ("you pay for what you use") while obscuring that they're just claiming whatever profit margin they want

The Honest Version

Token-based pricing is primarily a business model and demand management tool, not a reflection of actual variable costs. Companies could profitably charge much less per token or charge a flat fee, since marginal costs are low.

The token model persists because it:

Sounds technical and fair-minded
Allows flexible price adjustments without appearing arbitrary
Enables usage-based profit extraction without the negative PR of raising a flat fee
Skepticism is well-placed. The pricing is more about what they can extract than what it actually costs them.

Conclusion: think about tokens and AI the same way you think about kilowatt hours in your electricity bill. Your provider probably charges you fixed base rate and a variable kilowatt/hour rate, even though the amount of electricity you use is a negligible part of their costs, with most of their costs tied up in generation, poles and wires. Kilowatt hours are just a convenient way to charge whatever they think the market (and regulators) will bear. And so it is with AI subscriptions.

Is Iran pulling a George Washington? A reflection on 4 July!

The Iranian regime's grand strategy against the United States looks remarkably like the one George Washington used to beat the British Empire in the American War of Independence.

Washington’s playbook wasn't about winning spectacular battlefield victories. It was a "Fabian strategy":

Keep the Continental Army intact as a political symbol.
Drag out the conflict indefinitely.
Drive up the financial and political costs until the British public and Parliament lost the domestic will to keep funding a distant war.

Now look at Tehran’s approach to its war with the US and Israel. Its goals mirror 1776:

Survival is Victory: The regime’s primary goal is keeping its core structure intact. If it avoids direct overthrow and survives Western interventions, it wins.
Economic Attrition: Iran uses ultra-cheap hardware to drain massive U.S. resources. A single Iranian-designed Shahed one-way attack drone costs $20,000 to $50,000. The U.S. routinely fires Patriot interceptors costing $4 million each to down them—a staggering cost-exchange ratio in Iran's favor. It costs Iran little to keep its forces in the field at home, while it costs the US $bns to deploy its forces in the Gulf theater (and keep them there as a deterrent during the 'ceasefire'.)
Targeting Domestic Will: By drawing out gray-zone conflicts and utilizing regional proxies, Iran aims to induce strategic fatigue in Washington. The objective is to make the long-term political and financial price tag of U.S. involvement in the Middle East unpalatable to the American voter and Congress

Iran's Achilles: While Washington could rely on the oceans to protect his logistics and draw on large resource wealth, Iran faces massive internal exposure. Unlike 18th-century America, Tehran’s biggest threat isn’t actually the foreign military on its doorstep—it is the explosive economic strain and domestic unrest brewing among its own population at home

Iran is betting it can outlast the USA's interest in seeing the conflict through—but they are racing against the clock of their own internal collapse.

Preview for Blue Shield 2: DNIPRO

If a rocket falls in a forest…

Operation Dnipro Shield opened on a hot June morning with a single shot.

The Finnish Queen Hornet drone crossed the shattered cease-fire’s 10 km wide DMZ below the treeline, rising only to clear fences, or skirt buildings shattered in the last war. Unlike most of the drones that would be sweeping south over the DMZ near Nesterianka that morning, this one was piloted.

“Three technicians on the tower. I can take the shot from here and get the target plus three kills,” the drone pilot said to his spotter, who had located the target with his Lightning ISR drone a half hour earlier and was holding 2 km away to record the kill. “Range is 1,200 meters,” the spotter said. “They might hear you and drop from their perch before you fire, but the target is the transmitter, not the personnel. I’d get closer, just to be sure of hitting.”

The cell phone tower was Russia’s typically low-tech, low-cost answer to the effectiveness of Coalition and Ukrainian jamming of their GLONASS and Rassvet satellite networks. The high-power, demountable towers and transmitters were spread across the contact line, forming a mesh network that enabled Russia to burn through jamming and keep digital links alive for their soldiers and drone operators. “I know you would get closer,” the pilot said, lining up his sights on the transmitter at the top of the slightly swaying 20-meter-high tower. Two technicians were working on it; a third was on a ladder below them, passing tools back and forth. “And you probably should. I’m not you.”

He checked the windage indicator in his heads-up display and compared it to what he was seeing on the trees around the base of the tower. The recoilless rifle slung under the Queen Hornet was a single-shot, point-and-shoot weapon, armed with a 1 kg thermobaric warhead that had a destructive range of about 10 meters. A bad miss would simply fly wide and explode harmlessly, giving the technicians up the tower nothing more than a scare.

The lanky six-foot, prematurely bald pilot’s name was Alikersantti (corporal) Ukko ‘Simo’ Häyhä, of the Finnish Rapid Deployment Force, and he didn’t even consider the possibility he might miss. He piloted his drone quickly to 200 feet altitude, lined up the target in his crosshairs, checked the wind one last time, watched the slight sway of the tower carefully, then lifted the crosshairs upward—to allow for the curve of the shot—and to the right of the target, to allow for the sway. He did the math in his head. Range, one thousand one hundred eighty-seven. Projectile speed, 190 meters per second. Travel time… six point three. He plugged the data into his console and sent it to the Hornet, setting a self-destruct timer on his warhead. “Warhead set for 1189 meters, six-point-three flight time,” Häyhä said. “Check.”

“Uh, 1189, six point three? Concur,” his spotter said, running the numbers.

“Deconfliction check?”

“No friendlies in target area.”

Häyhä held his breath as the tower swayed left, then right. He didn’t aim where it was; he aimed where it would be, in the middle of its metronomic passage. “Sending,” he said simply. The vision in his 3D VR headset flared as the rocket under the drone ignited. Recoilless didn’t mean zero recoil. The rocket left the launcher tube, and the camera view dipped sharply toward the ground even though Häyhä immediately countered the blowback with his controls. It didn’t matter. He didn’t need to watch the round in flight. He was already piloting the Queen Hornet away and down out of view so it could live to shoot another day.

His spotter watched the round curve upward, and then down toward the distant tower, a thin trail of smoke in its wake. “Three… two…” Häyhä steadied his drone just above the ground, then turned his head to look at his spotter’s zoomed screen, centered on the tower. The vision flared, then settled, as a massive fireball erupted just over the transmitter, creating a thermal field 3,000 degrees hot and a shockwave 20 meters in diameter. When the flare died, nothing remained of the tower, the transmitter, or the three technicians. His spotter reached out to high-five him.

“First kill, Simo!” he said excitedly. “And a hat-trick too!” Häyhä didn’t ask to be given the nickname Simo. He had no family relation to the famous Finnish WWII sniper, Simo Häyhä, who claimed more than 500 Russian lives. But when his instructors on the rifle range had seen his uncanny ability to read the wind, humidity, and trajectory of his shot, Simo he was. He had been sent to the Utti Jaeger Regiment for sniper training and had later changed out his 7.62 mm Sako rifle for the RPG-armed Queen Hornet. And now the time had come to fulfill the promise of that storied name. He just grunted. “Let the ground crew know we are headed back to reload.”

“This is insane,” Lieutenant Dave ‘Flowmax’ Kamenir said over the radio, as he monitored the data flowing across his F-35's tactical display. “Check your battlenet feed, boss.”

His flight leader, Captain Georgia ‘Cyborg’ Leeson of the 495th Fighter Squadron ‘Valkyries’, flicked her eyes down to her own tac display and immediately saw what he was talking about. They were on patrol over the Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia, about 60 km behind the contact line in the south, loaded for air-to-air tasking. Also circling north of them was a B-21 stealth bomber with glide bombs. And out ahead of them, along a fifty-kilometer-wide swath of the front, several hundred Ukrainian Lightning II drones were headed across the former DMZ to targets inside Russian-occupied Ukraine. So many, her battle management software was grouping them in swarms of 20 so that the monitor wasn’t just awash with blue drone icons. Someone down there is about to have a very bad day, Cyborg mused.

The first Ukrainian Lightning drones were just tubular aluminum and radar-transparent plywood copies of a propeller-driven Russian design, the Molniya. They had a 40 km range, seven-kilo payload, and jamming-resistant Starlink terminals that enabled them to strike targets up and down the contact line, and also deep into the Russian rear. But the deeper they flew, the easier they were to jam, even when Ukraine developed repeater technology aboard Lightning hub drones that boosted the control signal. During the two-year ceasefire, Ukraine deployed the Blyskavka, or Lightning II. Range was doubled to 80 km, payload to 10 kilos, and jamming resistance increased by the adoption of chaotic frequency hopping.

But the biggest advance was the addition of swarming AI and autonomous terminal guidance technology. Now, a single operator could pilot up to ten Blyskavka drones to an ingress waypoint and then set them free to hunt for targets from their onboard database. If they had clear air, they could coordinate their attacks, but if they were jammed, they simply hunted alone. Produced in factories from Denmark to Poland to Lviv in Ukraine during the ceasefire, Ukrainian production of the cheap and simple Blyskavkas quickly reached 1,000 a week.

On the first day of Dnipro Shield, the Ukrainian Blyskavka 2 inventory numbered more than 50,000, twice the volume of Russia’s unimproved Molniya or the comparable Geran 2s and 3s, which Russia had been firing at Coalition forces for the last several weeks. Cyborg saw the difference in strategies between Ukraine and Russia playing out on her tactical screen as night and day. While Russia was firing its drones at thousands of targets along the 2,000 km contact line, from Budjak in the west to Kharkiv in the east, or Belarus in the north, Ukraine was concentrating its massed drone assault on a single fifty-kilometer front.

That morning, its Uncrewed Air Systems operators had used strings of concussive thermobaric drones to blast routes through the Russian minefields lining the DMZ south of Zaporizhzhia. Each route was two kilometers wide and ten to twenty kilometers deep. Through those gaps in the minefields, Coalition mechanized infantry was pouring from dispersed staging points along the contact line.

And flying ahead of the armor were the drone swarms Flowmax was focused on. “Makes a guy feel just a little redundant, you know what I mean?” he said.

“Lightning drones can’t stop cruise missiles or Sukhois,” Cyborg reminded him. “That’s why we’re here.”

“Yeah? So where is Ivan?” Flowmax retorted.

It was a fair question. They had seen very little Russian air activity since the defeat of the Russian air offensive over Budjak and the destruction of their airfields on Crimea. Ukraine and the Coalition had superiority over Ukrainian and occupied Crimea airspace, and if the next few days of intensive air operations succeeded, they would also have superiority over the Dnipro Theater. “Stay sharp, he’s coming,” she told him.

Cyborg didn’t mind a clear threat board. But she knew it couldn’t last. Satellite intel had shown Russia was emptying its Central Command airfields and moving almost its entire inventory west to reconstitute or replace defeated Southern Command squadrons. It had lost most of its front-line Su-57 stealth fighter squadrons and dozens of precious Su-34 heavy attack aircraft, but emptying its Central Command reserves would give it 40 to 50 additional aircraft, most able to carry cruise missiles. The hiatus was too good to last, and of course, it didn’t.

The AWACS patrolling over Dnipro broke the quiet. “Bullet Four Four Alpha from Hounddog, we have work for you. Pushing data to you now.” Cyborg keyed her mic.

“Bullet Four Four ready, send.”

“Bullet Four Four, we have a transient aerial contact over Crimea, sector CC3, bearing one nine zero your position, altitude five to ten, range two seven zero. Close and investigate please, Bullet Four Four.”

“Roger, Bullet Four Four is buster for sector CC3, out.” She didn’t need to pass the order to Flowmax; he had been listening and dropped in on her starboard wing, looking across the gap in the sky as she turned them southwest.

“Transient? I guess Russia didn’t lose all its Felons after all…”

I guess not, Cyborg thought. Flowmax sounded nervy. Excited. The thought of a possible engagement some minutes into her future didn’t even cause Cyborg’s heart rate to spike. She started running through the myriad mental checklists she carried in her head, fingers darting around the cockpit as she set up her radar, optical-infrared, and signals sensors. Cyborg thrived in certainty—and combat engagements could be chaotic, but it was controlled chaos. If ‘A’ happened, you did ‘B.’ If ‘C’, then ‘D.’ Action, and reaction. And if you stayed cool and did it right, the other guy died, and you didn’t.

Cyborg Leeson wasn’t particularly afraid of dying, though. Death was a binary event, an on-off kind of thing. One moment you were, the next, you weren't. She wasn’t a fan of the idea she might be crushed or set on fire before she died, though, because that could be a long few seconds of terrifying pain. But then, she’d given birth without anesthetic and made it through that, so how bad could it be?

She pushed her aircraft into super-cruise, and Flowmax followed as she checked her systems. Forty thousand feet, six eighty knots. She finished her setup and made sure her multifunction advanced data link was streaming data securely and quietly between her and Flowmax. Flowmax would be doing the same. “Take separation,” she said. “You hunt right of the bearing, I’ll hunt left.”

“Roger, Four Four Bravo separating,” he said, breaking high and rolling right. They would both move into EMCON mode now, radio silent, radars emitting only stuttering thin beams with a low probability of triggering Russian detection systems. They reeled in the distance to the mystery contact as she worked her radar. Range, one eighty. If the contact was a fourth-gen aircraft, she should see it soon. Nothing yet. A ghost return? Or Russia’s first air reaction to the operation unfolding on the ground below?

Russian Aerospace Force Captain Dmitry ‘Slugger’ Bebenko, of the Russian 7th Air Group, 7000th Air Base, had been ordered to combat-test a new Russian uncrewed “loyal wingman” that had never been used in combat, and to do it in the hottest sector on the new front.

He’d been told it could prove decisive for a Russian Air Force desperately short of combat pilots and aircraft, but it seemed more likely to Slugger that it would be yet another Russian “superweapon” that didn't deliver on the hype. In either case, it seemed pretty likely to get him killed. Slugger had trained with the first prototypes of the small batwing-shaped 25-ton S-70 Okhotnik B ‘loyal wingman’ drone nearly five years earlier. On the plus side, they had a better build quality than his Felon, with smooth radar-absorbent skins and a single Saturn engine with a shrouded exhaust that hid its infrared signature nicely.

On the downside, and it was a big one, they had terrible avionics systems with a tendency to lose contact with their mothership and go rogue. One of the early prototypes had ditched its mothership during a test flight and crashed inside Ukraine, giving up all its secrets to the enemy. Luckily, he hadn't been flying that mission. He heard the pilot who did got the blame for ‘top secret Russian tech’ falling into the hands of the Americans. I bet they were impressed, Bebenko thought wryly. But so far, the two Okhotnik Cs Bebenko had prowling out ahead of him were behaving. And that was a good thing, since it sounded like Russia’s forces on the contact line south of Zaporizhzhia were taking a pounding.

Russia was best on the offense, able to generate thousands of drone and missile attacks for aerial assaults, or meat waves for infantry assaults. On defense, not so great. While Ukraine had been forced to innovate drone and missile interceptor tech to counter the relentless Russian air offensive, Russia hadn't, and didn't. So Bebenko’s mission was to take out the threat at its source: the vulnerable drone launch teams in their trucks, who set up a launch site in a forest clearing or field, got anything from one to hundreds of drones in the air, and then packed down and scooted for cover. For that, he had to get close—30 to 50 km close, which was why the job fell to Russia’s dwindling stealth assets, its Felons and Okhotniks.

He worked his signals detection interface as he closed on the Ukraine coast. His two Okhotnik Cs were in ‘sniffer mode’, soaking up signals energy from across the contact line, their AI looking for the very specific signatures of Ukrainian drone launch crews testing their links to the base where their pilots were hidden. By spreading his Okhotniks wide and positioning himself between them, he created a twenty-kilometer-wide antenna in the sky and could triangulate the source of the signals. So far, he had identified no fewer than ten sites inside a fifty-kilometer section of the front. That was how he knew how hot the battlefield down below was getting. And having found them, now he had to kill them. He flicked his eyes around the sky, checked his distributed aperture optical infrared sensors and radar warning receiver.

He could see several air defense radars behind the Zaporizhzhia front, and the occasional whisper of energy from Coalition or Ukrainian fighters flying combat air patrols, but nothing that indicated his approach had been identified yet. Of course, that risk would increase exponentially the closer he got to the Ukraine coast, but he had no intention of putting himself in harm’s way. It was his Okhotniks’ job to do the killing, and the dying. Targets locked. The four 500 kg weapons the Okhotniks carried, Drel or ‘Drill’ glide bombs, had to be launched between 30 and 40,000 feet, so he eased them higher, while he dropped down to the waves over the Black Sea. He resisted the urge to look over his shoulder for the two Su-27s that should be powering in from behind to cover him. Come on, come on… I’m down here with my ass hanging out, he muttered to himself. Checked his Okhotnik’s range to the first two targets, inside one fifty now. His own range… about one seventy. Too damn close. He needed those Su-27s to… Contrails! Left and right of him, he saw the thin white contrails of Russian long-range missiles arcing into the sky, headed upward. The cowards had launched at maximum range, of course, probably another 100 km behind him. You’d do the same if you were flying a Cold War piece of shit, Bebenko, admit it. He pulled back his throttle, settling into a slow cruise as he split off his Okhotniks, assigning four targets to each. They probably wouldn’t survive long enough to hit one, let alone all four, but he’d be safe over Crimea and could care less. ‘Slugger’ Bebenko hadn’t earned his nickname because of a pugnacious approach to air combat, more because of his ability to throw back prodigious amounts of liquor without passing out. And to do that, you had to be alive at the end of a mission.

The ‘upgraded’ Su-27 Flankers a hundred klicks behind Bebenko were indeed pieces of shit: their radars were virtually useless, they had a huge radar cross-section at any angle, and the heat from their twin Saturn engines could probably be seen from space. But they had two things going for them. Speed, with the ability to hit Mach 2.3 on afterburner, so they could close and launch their weapons and then bug out before other fourth-gen aircraft like the Coalition Rafale or Gripen were still trying to get a lock on them. And ordnance—they now carried the new Axehead ‘fire and forget’ hypersonic missile. All they had to do was pick an arc of sky where the enemy was suspected to be (which was basically the entire contact line right now, with the number of sorties the Coalition and Ukraine were flying) and launch anywhere from 100 to 300 km range before they got the hell out of Dodge. The missiles would do the rest, rising into the stratosphere before cruising down toward the target area at supersonic speeds, looking for enemy aircraft with both passive and active sensors. Once it locked onto an aircraft, it went hypersonic, closing in seconds. In the Budjak campaign, the Axehead had proven very effective against older fighters without 360-degree optical infrared sensors to warn them of its approach. Against the newer F-35, not so much.

“Four Four Alpha from Bravo. Contacts! Bearing one one five, altitude 30,000, range… two hundred fifty,” Flowmax announced. “They’re booking. Speed Mach 2, turning away…”

Cyborg frowned as the radar data from Flowmax’s aircraft appeared on her screen too. Two hundred and fifty kilometers range? But the contact they’d been sent to investigate was much closer. She smelled a rat. “Bravo,the radar signature says they are Flankers,” Cyborg replied. “No point chasing them. They probably already launched on our sector. It’s a decoy attack. Stay on task but prepare to respond. They could have launched anti-radiation missiles or Kinzhals, but it’s probably Axeheads.”

“Roger Alpha, searching for the closer contact,” Flowmax replied.

He sounded disappointed she hadn't let him off the leash to go after the Flankers. But her conclusion was based on the tactics she had seen Russia employ so far in this war. First, take out air patrols, AWACS, tankers. Then air defense radars with anti-radiation missiles and drones, and finally, bring in the Su-34 Fullbacks for ground attacks. If you had them. With older Su-27ss appearing over Crimea for the first time, it looked like Russia’s mothballed reinforcements had arrived. But last gen Flankers weren’t the main problem. The possibility of stealth aircraft closing on the contact line was.

She worked her radar, pinpoint beams of energy flicking across the sky as she closed on the ghost contact. Then her radar warning receiver chimed. A contact appeared and disappeared. “Four Four Bravo, I just got hit by L-band radar on RWR, bearing one eight zero.”

“Roger Alpha, searching down one eight zero,” Flowmax replied. “L-band? That is a Felon. I thought we'd downed them all.”

“Or they brought more in,” Cyborg replied, narrowing her radar search to the small arc of sky where the signals energy of a possible enemy came from. Then an icon appeared on the radar window in her helmet-mounted display as an audio warning sounded. Got you. “Bravo from Alpha, contact bearing one two five, altitude five thousand, range 140. Trying to hide in the wave clutter. AI classification: probable Su-57 Felon. Alpha will prosecute; watch my back. They hunt in pairs.” Flowmax had tangled with Felons during the Budjak action, and ended up hanging from a parachute over Turkey.

“Tell me about it, boss. Bravo has your six.” She pushed her throttle forward and brought up her ordnance menu, but that was as far as she got. Her missile proximity alert screamed, her DAS sensor screen blinked, highlighting an incoming missile, and she barely had time to deploy her towed decoy and start pumping countermeasures into the sky around her before the Axehead was upon her.

Bebenko’s own radar warning receiver was screaming at him too, showing not just one, but two F-35 radars had locked onto him. He flicked his control stick left, put his Felon into a tight banking turn, and pushed his nose lower as he put the enemy fighters in the notch of his wing root. His best hope was to lure their missiles into following him around and bury them in the sea as they tried to lead him. He started breathing hard, forcing oxygen into his lungs, adrenaline kicking in, his entire focus on the instruments and readouts that would help him survive the next few minutes. Then the RWR stopped screaming at him, as the enemy fighters lost their lock. Funny how the moment before you die is when you feel most alive, he reflected. The Flankers had actually done their job? Amazing. Even better, he had a bearing to the enemy fighters' position now. He brought his nose back around and focused long-range L-band energy down the bearing. Ping. Two contacts, range one ten. His Okhotniks were already passing either side of the Coalition patrol. Please survive the Flanker attack, Slugger prayed as he pulled his nose up and began climbing toward the Coalition patrol. I have a score to settle.

The Russian missile was pulled off track by Cyborg's towed decoy and exploded in her wake as it passed at nearly six times the speed of sound. Not close enough for the shrapnel to reach her, but close enough for the shockwave to shove her tail down like her Panther had just been slapped on the exhaust nozzle. She corrected, desperately scanning her sensors and the sky for more threats. She got on the radio to the AWACS. “Hound Dog, Bullet Four Four flight is defensive,” she said. “Warn all aircraft, Axeheads inbound.”

Their pursuit of the ghost contact made them the first Coalition flight to meet the missiles fired by the Flankers, but others back over Ukraine might soon have to respond to them too. She still had a problem of her own. Where is that damn Felon? Flowmax had also evaded an Axehead which had locked onto him and was climbing back up to mission altitude.

“Bravo, you got a bearing to the Felon?” Cyborg asked him.

Her data link told her he didn't, but she’d be happy with even a hunch. “Negative Alpha, had an L-band hit from 180 degrees, but only one and—shit… Missile! I got incoming. Bravo is defensive.”

Cyborg turned toward the new bearing, saw on her tac monitor that Flowmax was dealing with a new threat. Slower, supersonic. R-73 Vympel, she guessed. From that Felon.

“Bullet Four Four from Hound Dog, we have vectored Gila Two flight of two to your sector to support. They will be in support range in twenty seconds,” the AWACS advised.

She checked the tac screen, zoomed it out, saw the incoming flight of two F-35s tagged with the callsign ‘Gila Two’. And frowned. Royal Australian Air Force 3 Squadron? She didn't know they’d arrived in theater. Seconds later, a voice on her radio confirmed it, in a broad Australian drawl.

“Bullet from Gila Two, you called for room service?” the Australian pilot asked.

Is the era of the 'superpower' dead?

Waning powers

The concept of the "superpower" has dominated global geopolitical architecture for nearly a century. Historically, a superpower is defined as a nation-state possessing such overwhelming military, economic, and technological might that it can project power and assert its political will globally, dictating terms to smaller nations with near-total impunity.

Yet, if you take away the threat of nuclear weapons. a fundamental question emerges: Do the current nations that claim this mantle—the United States, China, and Russia—actually still qualify?

It can be argued the traditional definition of a superpower has broken down. The ability of a dominant nation to use conventional military force to compel smaller states into submission has been structurally undermined. The rapid proliferation of low-cost drones, precision missiles, and asymmetric or hybrid warfare capabilities has effectively neutralized the massive air and naval superiority that superpowers once relied upon to enforce their will.

Three modern conflicts demonstrate this shift:

Russia and Ukraine

Despite possessing what was on paper an overwhelming superiority in air power, missile inventory, armor, and sheer manpower, Russia has proven unable to overcome Ukraine. Ukrainian defensive ingenuity, deeply anchored by western air defense systems, and tactical innovation in cheap, mass-produced first-person view (FPV) and long-range drones, advanced surveillance and use of data to shape the battlefield, has systematically blunted Russia's mechanized offensives, crippled its supply lines and neutralized traditional air superiority, turning a projected quick campaign into a war of attrition.

China and Taiwan

A similar calculus deters Beijing. China boasts the world’s largest navy by hull count and an air force vastly larger than Taiwan's. Yet, Chinese leadership remains hesitant to use military force, knowing that a cross-strait invasion risks a rapid, high-tech humiliation similar to what occurred in Ukraine and Iran. The defense-dominant nature of modern anti-air, anti-ship missiles and drone swarms makes the invasion of a smaller, well-prepared island an incredibly hazardous gamble, freezing China's regional ambitions.

The United States and Iran

The recent conflict spanning from February to June 2026 may provide another example. Despite the U.S. wielding arguably the most advanced conventional military machine in history, and despite Iran possessing virtually no modern conventional air force, easily overcome air defenses, and losing its primary naval surface combatants within the opening days of the hostilities, the war did not end in a clear superpower victory. Instead, Iran leveraged dense drone and missile swarms to inflict significant costs, waged economic war using its ability to shut down the Strait of Hormuz, and ultimately secured a controversial peace deal. The U.S. has now agreed to lift its naval blockade and withdraw its forces to begin negotiations, without achieving its threatened "complete capitulation of Iran."

The Failure of Economic Coercion

It is not merely a failure of conventional military projection; the threat of economic force is also a rubber mallet. The massive scale of a nation's GDP no longer guarantees superpower status. While China, the EU and the US remain economic heavyweights, their ability to force capitulation via economic warfare has proven to be less useful than they would like.

Sanctions Evasion: As demonstrated extensively by both Russia and Iran, global supply networks are too decentralized to control. Targeted nations quickly construct alternative financial clearing systems and shadow fleets sidestep Western blocks, while malleable 'allied nations' act as conduits for sanctioned goods and funds. Crypto transactions allow nations to sidestep barriers imposed in traditional banking systems.
The Tariff Paradox: Punitive tariffs have proven to be a double-edged sword. It can be strongly argued that trade tariffs punish the nation applying them just as heavily as the target country, given that domestic businesses and consumers within the tariffing country ultimately absorb the added costs.

Conclusion: A Dangerous Transition Ahead

There is an Israeli saying: If force doesn't work, use more force. Which can be a tempting deceit for a superpower feeling its powers waning.

The days when a superpower could park a carrier strike group off the coast of a smaller nation, institute a naval blockade or economic sanctions, and confidently expect a rapid capitulation are over. Even a full scale invasion such as that conducted by Russia cannot guarantee victory. Conventional coercion is failing across the globe.

What lies ahead is a highly volatile landscape. Deprived of reliable conventional and economic tools to enforce dominance, these waning superpowers are left with only one true mechanism to assert absolute geopolitical dominance: their nuclear arsenals. Reports indicating that Russian leadership has already actively discussed the potential employment of tactical nuclear weapons in Ukraine highlight this possible desperation. As the self-image of the superpower wanes, and the old superpowers struggle to get their way, the world enters a significantly more dangerous era where the nuclear threshold that has held for years, may be tested.

Iran: what they said / what it means #22.

Peace in our time? What a deal with Iran needs to look like.

What they said: Various credible sources are reporting a 'memorandum of understanding' between Iran and USA was signed digitally today and will be signed physically Friday 6.19, cementing a ceasefire in place, lifting Iranian blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and US blockade of Iran, and beginning 60 days of negotiations between the parties.

What it means: commerce through the Strait, which was free and open before the start of Feb hostilities, will eventually be open again (whether 'free' will depend on negotiations, since Qatar and Iran are holding separate discussions on whether to levy 'navigation fees.')

On the issues which the US/Israeli governments listed as reasons for going to war, here is what to look for in the coming negotiations...

Iran nuclear capabilities (compared with the IAEA verified JCPOA agreement - aka 'the Obama deal' - cancelled by first Trump administration):

JCPOA included a declaration by Iran it will not pursue nuclear weapons. This is expected to be required again, but means nothing since Iran has always said it does not have this ambition, and the previous Ayatollah even issued a 'fatwah' against development of nuclear weapons.
JCPOA capped the number of standard uranium enrichment centrifuges at 6,000 and advanced centrifuges to zero
JCPOA capped low-enriched uranium to 300kg
JCPOA capped highly-enriched uranium at zero.
JCPOA released $6bn in frozen Iranian assets on signing, and created a pathway to release 'up to' $100bn if all milestones were met and validated.
JCPOA lifted US imposed nuclear related sanctions, but not 'secondary' sanctions related to missile production, human rights abuses and support for proxies. JCPOA also included 'snap back' mechanisms for sanctions if milestones were not met.

So those are the benchmarks the new deal needs to be better vs 'the Obama deal.' Others the US has floated:

Iran missile capabilities

Constraints on numbers of Iranian ballistic missiles (short to long range) without US agreeing to draw down forces stationed in Gulf bases in return.

Iran proxies / hostilities in Gaza and Lebanon

Iran will be asked to support disarmament of Hezbollah and Hamas. Forget this, never going to happen because Israel is not part of the negotiations and would not agree to limits to its right to defend itself against attacks by these proxies

Possible wild cards in US 'ask' (also unlikely to make final cut)

Limits on rearmament: 'treaty of versailles' style limits on naval tonnage, number of 'fast boats', mines, drone production, air force

Possible wild cards in Iranian 'ask' (also unlikely to make final cut)

Reparations for war damages or rebuilding assistance
Right to levy fees on commercial traffic in Strait of Hormuz
Lifting of all sanctions, not just nuclear related
Reduction in US Gulf bases and force numbers
Removal of all restrictions on peaceful use of nuclear energy

Conclusion: agreement within 60 days is highly unlikely. The JCPOA agreement took three years to negotiate. Both parties have an incentive to draw the negotiation out - Iran to get a better deal, the US administration to push any final deal out beyond US November mid-term elections if it looks like it would need to give any concessions to Iran.

Highly probable: a US return to limited hostilities if it feels the negotiations are not proceeding to its advantage / Iran renewed threat to Strait of Hormuz if it feels the same way.

Germany and France have abandoned their joint stealth fighter project FCAS (Future Combat Air System). It became clear the program was dead in the water months ago when German Chancellor Friedrich ⁠Merz ⁠said: "Will we still need a manned fighter jet in 20 years' time? Do we still need it, given that we will have to develop it at great expense?"

Here is the case for NOT spending billions to build new fighter jets.

IT'S A DEAD END: The era of developing new crewed fighter jets is officially over—or at least, it should be. For NATO countries, sinking hundreds of billions into next-generation crewed air platforms is a strategic dead end. The math, the timeline, and the rapidly evolving nature of modern combat simply no longer add up for traditional aerospace projects.

IT WILL TAKE TOO LONG: To start, any clean-sheet crewed fighter jet program initiated today would face an incredibly long development runway. Given the immense bureaucratic, aerodynamic, and software complexities inherent in modern defense procurement, such an aircraft would not realistically achieve operational status until 2040 or beyond. By the time the first squadron is ready, the geopolitical and technological landscape will have completely outgrown them.

DRONES WILL RULE THE SKIES: We are already witnessing a massive shift toward autonomous systems. Right now, and increasingly in the decade to come, uncrewed drones and autonomous aircraft are taking over the exact mission sets once reserved exclusively for multi-role fighter jets. From Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) and Close Air Support (CAS) to Combat Air Patrols (CAP) and complex missile interception, autonomous algorithms and disposable airframes are proving they can handle the risk without endangering human lives.

THE $$ DON'T ADD UP: The financial disparity between these two paradigms is staggering. Exquisite, 5th- and 6th-generation crewed platforms are prohibitively expensive when contrasted against the scalable economics of drone research and mass production (Heitzenrater, 2025). The capital required to design a single new jet type could instead fund an entire ecosystem of rapidly iterative, AI-driven autonomous systems.

Furthermore, the tail-end costs of crewed aviation are unsustainable. Beyond the multi-billion-dollar R&D phase, the life-cycle maintenance of legacy platforms requires intense mechanical upkeep—often demanding dozens of maintenance man-hours per individual flight hour. When you compound this with the fact that training a single pilot on a modern fighter like the F-35 costs upwards of 10 million USD, the fiscal burden becomes impossible to justify against cheaper, low-maintenance uncrewed fleets.

AIRCRAFT NEED TO COEXIST WITH SEA AND GROUND PLATFORMS AND THEY WILL ALL BE UNCREWED TOO: Ultimately, warfare as a whole is experiencing an irreversible migration toward uncrewed architectures. By 2040, crewed platforms will no longer be the standard; they will be the rare exception. This transition isn’t isolated to the skies, either. We are seeing the exact same pattern emerge across every domain of defense—from autonomous surface and subsurface vessels at sea to robotic combat vehicles on land. Future emphasis on interoperability will make it easier for uncrewed systems to share data links at speeds human pilots will not be able to follow.

WHY will the US still build crewed fighters? Jobs and $$$ in the big business legacy defense industry of course. Not current trends or future needs. And until the age of slaughterbots (robots with guns) dawns, we will still need infantry to hold ground.
