Drone Denial Syndrome (DDS)

I think we need to coin a new term to describe 'drone blindness' (for now, I'll go with Drone Denial Syndrome, or DDS) : that condition among senior officers that causes them to downplay the impact of drones on modern combat, and their inability to recognize it and adapt.

Take today's shining example, the Vice Commander of the US Special Operations Command on the War on the Rocks podcast, asked about lessons learned from Ukraine: "Now, what we probably won't do is buy thousands of unmanned systems, right? Because one, we don't want to pay for them and I have nowhere to put them."

Yes, he said 'I don't want to pay for them, and I have nowhere to put them'. Well, I have a newsflash: Russia is buying them by the millions, and they know exactly where to put them - over the heads of our warfighters!

To quote retired Aust Army Maj General Mick Ryan in March '25: "Military institutions that hope to be successful in war must never remain at a steady state. They must have the intellectual battles that develop new ideas, doctrines, technologies and organisations to respond to rapid technological change and the changing threats posed by adversaries. The war in Ukraine, and particularly the drone adaptation battle, offers many insights into how contemporary military organisations might hone their ability to learn and adapt in modern war."

The unfortunate thing about 'insights', is you need to open your eyes to see them...
